We have reached information about the completion of the work of the Inspectorate of the Polish Armed Forces concerning technical documentation regarding the successor of the Mountain Infantry Backpack Pattern 987/MON.
The tender for the purchase of a few tens of thousands units is to be announced this summer. The procedure was started once again because the soldiers complained about the poor quality, reliability and comfort of use of the current equipment. The biggest problems are the weak zippers, the poor quality internal waterproof membrane, the easily breaking plastic clamps and compression straps that tear off.
The Polish Army is trying on a new backpack, again. About five years ago, a prototype of the main backpack and a small patrol backpack was created, but despite the positive evaluation, it was not put into production. The problem was the price barrier of, according to the army, about 2.500 PLN a piece.
The current tender takes into account the reduction of costs of the new backpack obtained by changing the material from camouflage coated material to a uniform green color, and maintaining water resistance through the use of covers instead of an expensive waterproof material from which the backpacks were to be sewn. The covers will also be used on suspenders and hip belts.
At the request of the soldiers, the backpack's quick release system was also redesigned (model 987/MON does not have this feature at all) and the back padding of a small backpack, which, as in the 987/MON model, will be part of the mountain infantry set.
How will the project develop? Which company will win the tender? WMASG will certainly let you know about it.
