During the weapons expo new designs by the Kalaashnikov Concern were presented, including the AM-17 and the AMB-17 carbines.
The AM-17 is chambered for the 5.45x39mm round and designed for the same purposes as the currently used AKS-74U.
The AMB-17 is a version with an integrated sound suppressor, chambered for the 9x39mm round used in the AS Wał or the VSS Vintorez.
The carbines presented are a major step forward in terms of ergonomics. Most importantly - the use of many polymer parts in their design reduced the overall weight of the carbines compared to the weapons currently in use. They also feature an adjustable stock and a top RIS rail which spans the whole length of the carbine. Last but no least, the fire selector switch is ambidextrous and also the ability to place the charging handle on the left or right side of the gun.
It is currently unknown if theses designs will find their way into Russian armed forces. What is know, however, is that from 2018 the carbines will be tested by chosen military units.
