The unusual OSCAR6™ HDX PRO spotting scope from SIG Sauer, presented this year, is now available in stores. Priced at 1999.99 USD, this model is equipped with the OmniScan™ Optical Image Stabilization system, which has already been used in one of the manufacturer's binoculars - ZULU6™ HDX PRO.
The OSCAR6™ HDX PRO offers variable magnification in the range of 16-32x and a field of view from 2.4° to 3.4° (eye relief: 22–16 mm). The scope maintains relatively compact dimensions: it weighs about 1.56 kg and is ~29 cm long. The manufacturer has used a 60-millimeter lens and advanced HDX PRO™ glass system, using high-quality coatings and ED glass (with very low dispersion). The equipment is also supposed to cope well in conditions of limited visibility, ensuring high quality color reproduction.
However, the most attention is drawn to the image stabilization system used in the scope (OmniScan™ OIS), with an effectiveness range of up to two degrees. After activating it using the ring switch located on the lens, the electronically controlled system instantly adjusts the intensity of operation to the type of movements performed. This allows both convenient observation of the area and precise spotting of objects at a longer ranges. The effectiveness of the system can be seen not only when using the scope on a tripod (it eliminates the effect of vibrations, wind and other interference), but also when holding the scope in one's hand.
The OSCAR6™ HDX PRO is powered by two AA batteries, which provide up to 50 hours of operation with active image stabilization. The product is equipped with an ARCA-SWISS compatible mount, as well as a classic 1/4"-20 screw socket. What's more, the scope has been designed with further expansion in mind - its eyepiece module is replaceable, and the manufacturer has announced the availability of optional versions.
The scope comes with lens covers, a wrist strap, an EVA foam case, and a lifetime, transferable SIG SAUER Electro-Optic Infinite Guarantee. The scope itself meets IPX7 waterproof standards and is fogproof.
Observing the development of the spotting scope market, it is easy to notice increasingly diverse approaches to optical design. The growth of competition and the variety of available models favor users, who can choose equipment precisely to suit their needs. An example of a completely different design philosophy is the Configurable Field Spotting Scope (CFS) 6–36×50 mm F1 from Nightforce - one of the most recognizable manufacturers in this industry.
