The Japanese Self-Defense Forces have presented a new weapon to be accepted into service soon - the new generation Type 20 5.56 mm carbine (also known as the Howa 5.56) with the Beretta GLX 160 under barrel grenade launcher and also the new H&K VP9 M service pistol (Maritime) .

Type 20 will replace the previously used Type 89 rifles which, interestingly, have not completely replaced the older Type 64 yet.

The first 3,000 rifles will be delivered this year, and the first user will be the Amphibious Rapid Deployment Brigade of the Japanese Self-Defense Forces. The Japanese Ministry of Defense estimates that it will take 30 years to fully distribute 150,000 rifles.

The new rifles cost about 280,000 yen (about 2,600 USD) per unit, which is a lower price than the cost of foreign counterparts, such as the HK416 and the SCAR-L, which were considered when looking for a new weapon for the Japanese army.

Little is known about the new Japanese weapon, however, based on photographic material, many borrowings from modern designs can be seen. The carbine was equipped with an M-Lok system handgaurd, a modern (probably made by BCM) pistol grip, interchangeable with other available to the AR15 platform, and a stock similar to the one found in the SCAR carbine.

The design is probably feed from standard STANAG magazines. Double-sided manipulators, an adjustable gas valve and a three-position fire selector (safe, single, full-auto) also attract attention.

The HK SFP9M pistol was developed for services performing tasks at sea. The weapon is characterized by parts and coatings with increased corrosion resistance to salt sea water.

From the outside, the marine version of the SFP9 is distinguished by the engraved letter M and a trident on an anchor symbol (slightly similar to the American NSW emblem). Apparently, standard models of the gun used in the Japanese arsenal are soon to be supplemented with OR (Optics Ready) models, which are ready for mounting mini collimators.
