The Heckler und Koch G36 raises extreme opinions - both in terms of aesthetics and the carbine itself. It is (apparently) for the latter reason that the Bundeswehr has a new succession to the G36 model.
The Germans have initially managed to find a new solution in the form of the Haenel MK556 carbine, but... the tender was canceled - we wrote about it HERE.
Meanwhile, Steyr, together with the American Wilcox and Corax Defense company, have decided to modernize the G36 naming the project G62.
The design is a retrofit kit for German carbines and includes a new metal receiver and, optionally, a new barrel. The set will also includes a new magazine well compatible with STANAG magazines, an optional detachable picatinny rail/transport handle and a rail system/Wilcox FUSION handguard, which itself includes a number of accessories including tactical lighting, laser and IR sights - all powered by a built-in battery.
It has not been disclosed how much the whole set weighs. The Steyr company justifies the choice of a metal receiver with an increase in the thermal stability of the carbine compared to older models with a carbon fiber-reinforced polyamide one and an increase in the accuracy of the weapon, as evidenced by the test data presented in the table below.
The receiver was made by Corax Defense.
The policy of the above-mentioned companies, which treat the G62 project as a package of improvements and not as a "new" weapon, may suggest that it will be offered outside Germany to countries that are also users of the G36, such as Spain or Lithuania.
