Proper Grid Chest Rig N.22 from our perspective

Proper Grid is a new player in the field of tactical sewing, which combines modern laminates and laser cutting technology with more rugged, traditional solutions. You can read how does the result of this combination looks like and about my thoughts regarding the philosophy behind the project of a simple chest rig in this article.

From this text you will learn:
- how I rate the quality of products made by Proper Grid,
- what the "Chest Rig N. 22 Front Panel" looks like and how it is made,
- what its possible configurations are, using additional elements such as: the Dangler N.33 Waist Pouch, the Kangaroo Admin Insert Organizer, the Open Triple Insert Pouch for AK/AR-15 Magazines, the Chest Rig Tactical Vest Harness, the Molle Wing Adapter Panel, the Molle/PALS Adapter,
- what each of the above elements looks like and what it is used for,
- what is the vision of the products and what possibilities does it offer thanks to the modularity of the entire set.

Proper Grid Chest Rig

Chest Rig N. 22 Front Panel

It seems to be a fairly simple panel, in our case acting as the main element around which our entire set will be focused. In reality, it is a multifunctional placard that can be attached to virtually any Plate Carrier offered on the market. The plastic elements are removable, which allows to use different buckles. If that doesn't help, the set also includes G-hook buckles.

A Velcro hook is sewn onto the entire surface of the back, which will provide excellent durability and stiffness after making contact with the loop surface on the element to which we want to attach the N.22. For the sharp elements of the Velcro not to damage clothes, the whole thing is covered with a panel with a soft part of the Velcro, which is somewhat reminiscent of velour due to its density. Since we are already describing the back, it is worth noting that it is from this side that we can attach additional elements, the mounts of which also have Velcro on both sides. However, we will return to this when discussing the set's modularity.

The front has cuts made with a laser. The number of holes corresponds to three rows and six columns of tapes compatible with the MOLLE/PALS system. The vast majority of the front is covered with soft green Velcro or Multicam, depending on the color version. On the bottom, we also have cuts through which you can attach a shock cord, which will allow to carry, for example, a tourniquet in a very comfortable way. Of course, you can also attach single pouches here, for example ones designed to carry pistol magazines. Inside, we have two types of Velcro, which are designed to keep replaceable inserts in their place. They can be ordered from the manufacturer or we can use ones made by various other brands because a certain unwritten standard was used here. We will return to the inserts later in the article.

It is made of one layer of Cordura and trimmed with soft velour on the inner side. The so-called "H" design is one of the most comfortable solutions in my opinion. What is worth noting is another combination with laser technology. True, it was done only in a few places, but it adds a lot of functionality to this seemingly simple harness. This is already visible on the front part, where the cuts allow to attach single magazine pouches or various devices fastened with a clip, such as individual radio stations.

There is also a sewn-in flat rubber straps: two rows that can hold, for example, a lightstick or wires of the aforementioned radio station, and wider protective buckles used for integration with the equipment used. The plastics can be removed and replaced, for example, by G-hooks. Further cuts can be found on the part lying on the user's back, right under the neck. Although we only have one mounting row here, thanks to it, a larger cargo pocket can be mounted, because we have four MOLLE/PALS columns at our disposal. There are also the same number of cuts on the part of the belt resting on the lumbar region. However, it should be noted that it is permanently sewn to the strap. So it is important to adjust it properly so that it is in the center.

Proper Grid Chest Rig Molle Wing

Molle Wing Panel Adapter

Thanks to these elements, we can widen our placard, creating a fully-fledged Chest Rig in terms of dimensions. They are mounted using double-sided Velcro sewn into the rear part of the N.22. In terms of dimensions, each corresponds to three rows and two mounting columns compatible with MOLLE/PALS. These adapters fulfill their function, but during use I got the impression that they were not stiff enough and some pouches with heavy magazines caused them to bend while, for example, running. While exchanging ideas with Proper Grid during a casual conversation, I mentioned this problem, after which I was assured that the new versions already have additional stiffening, which is supposed to eliminate this problem. However, the version we received does not have this stiffening.

Proper Grid Chest Rig Adapter molle

Molle/PALS Adapter

A simple, yet very practical element that can be attached from the bottom of the N.22, or any other Plate Carrier that has a Velcro fastening for its cover. Thanks to this seemingly small element, we can attach the N.33 Waist Bag, ammunition pouches, lower abdomen protection, or pull a rubber cord for mounting a tourniquet. Personally, I think this little thing is worth considering as it can significantly expand the capabilities of your existing equipment, and not necessarily one made by Proper Grid.

Proper Grid kangaroo admin insert

Kangaroo Admin Insert

Since we are on the subject of small functional elements, it is worth taking a closer look at the administration pocket, which has its place in the N.22 right next to the magazine inserts. The size fills almost the entire internal space of the panel, so we have quite a lot of space for a larger notebook or possibly a phone. Fastened with a spiral zipper, this pocket will effectively protect items from falling out, while also providing a large and free opening when reaching inside. Inside there is an organizer made of flat rubber. Of course, it is worth remembering that the magazines will press on the pocket and in the case of inserting the magazine into a pouch, you can also damage the contents carried in the "Kangaroo". True, it requires a certain amount of bad luck, but it is non the less possible. Do you have a backpack with soft Velcro and you lack a pocket for small items? This product will also work well here. If I had to be really picky about something, it would be the Velcro, which is sewn in horizontally, not vertically. This has to do with the tear resistance associated with the arrangement of the hooks used in the Velcro. Only by sewing it in vertically do we achieve the force intended by the manufacturer to hold both elements together. Of course, in the case of such a pocket, this has little significance, and is only worth paying attention to if someone wanted to use it to attach, for example, to a backpack on the outside. It could simply detach under load. This would not happen if the Velcro was sewn in differently.

Proper Grid Magazine insert

Open Triple Insert Magazine Pouch for AK/AR-15 Magazines

The insert, thanks to which we can use virtually any magazines of the AR or AK family of weapons. The placard inside is held firmly thanks to the large surface of Velcro sewn on both sides. A very useful solution found here is the ability to adjust the depth to which the magazine is to be inserted. This is useful when using different carbines with different magazine dimensions.

Proper Grid Dangler N.33 Waist Bag

Dangler N.33 Waist Bag

Finally, an element that will work just as well on a battlefield as in everyday use. Namely, we are talking about a waist bag that have become extremely popular recently. In our case, it is part of the equipment set. Nevertheless, there is nothing to prevent from wearing the Dangler N.33 on its own, with jeans for instance. The set includes straps that allow to wear it on a belt or over a shoulder.

Of course, it can also be attached to MOLLE/PALS webbing. In our case it also applies to the adapter. It is horizontally quite small in size, but wide, which in my opinion gives it a very good capacity. It will fit a basic tool kit, both for the shooting range and for an airsoft game. Thanks to internal compartments, one can separate a phone so as not to damage it's screen with other small items carried. Additionally, there is another mesh pocket with a zipper that gives an insight into the contents, which is quite often useful.

A flat rubber organizer will come in handy for separating a multitool and flashlight. This is also where my only complaint about the N.33 will be stated. Namely, the seams lack locking, and straight stitching has been used. Although there is no need to worry about the strength of the stitching with the threads used, the situation is different with rubber. If it is excessively stretched, due to the loads and characteristics of the thread used, the rubber may wear out. Of course, this is not an immediate process and these tapes will have to be stretch a lot for this to happen. Therefore there is no reason to panic, but it does give room for improvement. In the main compartment is fastened with a zipper, we also have a loop for a snap hook or a pen. On the outside from the front there is soft Velcro and a splash-proof zipper, giving us access to the mesh pocket. The bottom has loops through which a shockcord runs, through which we can put, for example, a tourniquet.

Summary

Proper Grid products are not the cheapest ones and you need to be aware of that. However, we know from experience that you often have to pay some more for good quality products. In this case, we are not dealing with the so-called triumph of style over substance. In my opinion, these products are priced correctly, considering that they are manufactured in Poland and on a fairly small scale. The fabrics and plastics are top-notch and nothing bad can be said about them. The sewing is careful and aesthetic, and technologically well thought out. I also see a certain system behind each product, which is intended to enable any adjustment of the entire set to the user's own needs. Although, currently the modularity is limited by the available assortment, some solutions clearly indicate that further products may be just around the corner. I will be closely watching the new products, which I can safely recommend at the moment.
