FN America, LLC, the manufacturer of the majority of firearms for the US Army, has announced that it will present a prototype of the latest version of the MK 48 LMG in version chambered for the 6.5 Creedmoor round during the Special Forces Industry Conference 2019 (SOFIC). The development of this light machine gun has been undertaken as the FN's response to last year's approval of the 6.5 Creedmoor round by USSOCOM for further development.
Prototype of the FN MK 48 Mod 2 6.5 Creedmoor incorporates the latest improvements prepared for a series of FN's light and medium machine guns, including a buttstock adjustable in various planes, an improved charging handle, an improved front grip with one bottom and two side rails, an improved bipod and a more durable feeder latch, ensuring that the feeder cover locks correctly and firmly during loading.
FN has also informed that after completing work on the prototype, a conversion kit and a barrel replacement for the current MK 48 Mod 1 models will be made so that they can be modified to the Mod 2 standard. All can be done at the level of a military gunsmith, without the need to return the weapon to the manufacturer.
