The US Department of Defense informed the public about the choice of two M16 A4 rifle suppliers as part of the Foreign Military Sales program aimed at purchasing equipment, armament and training by governments cooperating with the USA.

The companies will compete for every order under a contract worth 383,311,941 USD for the supply of M16A4 rifles for Afghanistan, Grenada, Iraq, Lebanon and Nepal. The estimated delivery date is April 28, 2025.

For those unfamiliar with the subject, the M16A4 is the fourth generation of the legendary M16 rifle whose origins date back to the Vietnam War. In the latest version the weapon is equipped with a detachable transport handle, after disassembly of which the shooter has the option of mounting optical sights on a picatinny rail the "flat top" upper receiver. The rifle is also equipped with the Knight's Armament Company M5 RAS mounting rail system. Until 2015, the rifle was the basic small arms of the USMC infantry units, when the corps decided to adopt the M4 as the main weapon of line units.
