Remote control weapons are nothing new in the world if movies, as well as on the real battlefield. Such machine guns and cannons can be found aboard ships and in the turrets of tanks and armored personnel carriers, however, the designs described below seem to be pioneers in the field of remotely controlled small arms.

The Light Remote-Controlled Weapon (LRCWS) system, offered in two versions by Smart Shooter, enables the implementation of technology, until recently thought to be abstract, on a modern battlefield. The Smash Hopper (the system's name) is based on a fire control system connected to a remotly control unit placed on a tripod.

The design allows for remote operation of an carbine in the AR system, of any caliber, after mounting it into the device. Unlike the heavier types of RC weapons mentioned above, the Smash Hopper can be easily handled by light infantry. The kit is also available in a lighter version called Smash Hopper Light.

The system can be used during day or night against ground targets or small unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). The battery-powered system is controlled by a durable remote control with a large screen and a crosshair. The system can be controlled both wirelessly and traditionally via a cable.

Whether Smash Hopper will revolutionize the modern battlefield, time will tell, but the idea itself is worth attention.
