On May 30, 2022, the government of Canada presented Bill C-21, which caused a real shock among the airsoft community: both entrepreneurs and private individuals. The planned change in the regulations proposed, among other things, prohibiting the sale and use of items whose appearance is supposed to resemble modern firearms with high precision. This provision of Bill C-21 clearly threatened the continued existence of airsoft replicas and communities in Canada and resulted in creation of many initiatives to encourage the government to change its mind. Efforts were made to highlight all the positive features of this hobby, from recreation to a way of life for many people related to the subject from the professional side.
Unity of the community, cooperation and all efforts paid off. Last week, an amendment proposed by the New Democratic Party (NDP) was passed, which excluded airsoft replicas from the list of prohibited items.
However, this is not the end of the battle - the government, in cooperation with people from the industry, is still planning to focus on the issue of airsoft and potential regulations. Entrepreneurs and players will once again have to unite in a common fight to make possible restrictions reasonable.
At the moment, airsoft in Canada is safe again. At the same time, for communities in other countries, the situation is a perfect example that unity and cooperation can bring beneficial results in a situation when a threat hang over our passion.
