Target practice simulators are quite a widespread product among shooters. They are also slowly making their way into airsoft. Using smartphone application or interactive targets, they are based on shock detection when shooting at them (which carries some risks). The new Polish Smart Target training system allows it to be used both with firearms using dummy rounds and with a patented laser insert for airsoft replicas. While the operation of the system with firearms is widely known, a proprietary Airsoft laser insert system was created for the replicas, which reacts to the flow of air/expanding gas. One should not worry about any damage to the inner barrel, thanks to a design using 4 o-rings, stabilizing the insert inside the barrel, which also affects stability. Replicas do not need to be disassembled for installation of the insert, or taking it out, thanks to a M4 thread in its front part. The only limit may be the length of the inner barrel, which must be more than 77 mm. The manufacturer also recommends using a replica with the insert in single fire mode only.
In addition, the second element of the system is a small Smart Target PRO V2 with 16 sensors detecting the laser beam. The size of the target is 149x82x35 mm with a field of 65×84 mm, on which 16 sensors are placed, which corresponds to the center area of regular practice targets. The target has 9 different modes of operation (basic, focus, focus and time, reaction time, looped reaction time, looped reaction time with randomization, time between two shots, splits, randomized targets) with diodes on the target acting as a hit indicator, hit points or to display informing about the mode and its parameters.
The range of the entire system depends on the emitter used. The confirmed ranges are 125 m for a .223 dummy cartridge and 50 m for the airsoft insert, but the manufacturer emphasizes that the tests were limited by the lack of appropriate optics and they may be higher. All products use a laser with a wavelength of 650 nm and a power of less than 5 mW. The issue of power supply is quite diverse between individual models due to their dimensions and this affects the number of shots that can be fired from each one on a single battery. The price of such a device is 900 PLN for the target itself and 250 PLN for a dummy round in various calibers (9 mm, .38 Special, .223 Rem, 7.62x39 mm, .308 Win, 12G) and 600 PLN for an insert for airsoft replicas.
