On Friday, June 23, 2023, it was announced that the Canadian Armed Forces has selected the Sig Sauer P3209x19mm model as their primary service pistol. The contract was won by M.D. Charlton Co. Ltd. of Victoria, B.C. to supply seven thousand pistols and holsters. The contract includes an option for another 2,500 weapons.
The P320 in the Canadian Armed Forces will be designated as C22 and deliveries are expected to begin in the middle of this year.
The SIG Sauer P320 is a full-size, modular semi-automatic pistol that uses a percussion mechanism instead of a hammer system. The magazine holds 17 rounds. The design of the pistol allows for easy, tools free conversion to fire different calibers, but most likely the Canadians will not take advantage of this feature.
So far, Canadian soldiers have been using the Browning Hi-Power pistol as their primary handgun, which was developed years before the start of World War II.
