On Monday, January 8, the first class on Optimization of Fundamental Techniques, the so-called OFT in the training offer of Dominik Górski, took place. Dominik is one of the best IPSC dynamic shooters in Poland and, at the same time, our colleague from old adventures with airsoft, co-organizer of, among other things, the world's largest IPSC Action Air competition, "Adrenalina Open", and previously a member of the "Kompania Nigdy Już" group. The OFT training is part of a broader project of building Shooting Training Groups focused on working on the constant progress of the skills of its participants under Dominik's supervision. It was a great opportunity to verify and improve my skills.
Before we move on to the training itself, it is worth mentioning that Dominik has been perfecting his technique in dynamic sports shooting for years under the supervision of world-class champions, such as: Eric Grauffel (eight-time IPSC World Champion, nine-time IPSC European Champion, CZ factory shooter, founder and main trainer of the CZ Shooting Academy), Ljubisa Momcilovic (multiple medalist of the IPSC European Championships, CZ Shooting Academy Instructor, uniformed services instructor), Bob Vogel (IPSC World Champion, IDPA World Champion, USA IPSC Champion, multiple USPSA champion, professional sharpshooter, uniformed services instructor), Ben Stoeger (USA, IPSC World Champion, multiple USPSA Champion, author of many books about dynamic shooting, recognized instructor of many leading competitors), Joe Farewell (USA, IPSC World Vice-Champion in rifle, Champion, USA 3 Gun Champion, instructor of federal services and US special units).
Dominik has won the IPSC Polish Championship 2021 and 2020, the IPSC Polish Vice-Championship 2023, 2022, 2019 and 2018, and also represented Poland during the 2017 World Championships and 2023 and 2019 European Championships. He is an instructor of The Main International Shooting Instructors Association, and what also affects the quality of his training is that he is a motor preparation trainer with his own training facility NoLimit Gym Dziki in Warsaw (not to be confused with a shooting range), with the NoLimit DVC Shooting Team. During the training, participants not only learn what to do and how to do it, but it is explained to them in such a way that they better understand the motor skills of their body, i.e., what and how it positively or negatively affects the operation of a weapon during shooting. Thanks to this, they are later able to independently "sculpt" their posture, grip, and trigger action, and, at the same time, they should remember to self-control these elements during and after shooting.
During a 4-hour training session, participants began by understanding various aspects of the shooting posture, mistakes that can be made, and how to independently find the optimal body position during dynamic shooting with a pistol (and de facto a rifle) instead of listening to the instructor's rigid instructions. In the meantime, the atmosphere facilitated discussion, so there were also references to techniques outside sports shooting, leading to the conclusion that currently sports techniques are widely adopted in the training methodology of uniformed services. After optimizing their shooting stance, the participants moved on to working with the weapon, starting with optimizing the grip and learning about available alternatives and methods of independently developing the optimal hand position on their weapon. Each person is built differently, just as the workings and impact of different weapon models on the shooter is different. Next, work on the trigger and several different drills in different variants as part of an exercise on an IPSC target. At each stage of the training, Dominik Górski tried to provide participants with as much knowledge as possible in an accessible way so that they can better understand the processes occurring during shooting between the motor skills of their body and the mechanics of the weapon.
Even though the training is dedicated to IPSC shooters and the classes are conducted with this in mind, every intermediate and advanced shooter who wants to shoot dynamically will gain something from them (the author is not thinking about IPSC yet). Dominik Górski conducts the training in a great atmosphere, not only instructing what and how to do it, but above all, he tries to make the participants better understand the processes occurring during shooting and what they should work on next. What was especially noticeable at the end of the class, when the first timer signal appeared...
Dominik Górski and Medard Starzycki (author)
The OTF training with Dominik Górski in Krakow took place for the first time and, despite the aim of doing them periodically as part of the Shooting Training Groups, it all depends on further interest. To take part in such a training you are required (of course) to have your own weapon and a belt with magazines (it does not have to be a dynamic shooting belt) and about 250 rounds of ammunition, and of course time. The cost of a 4-hour training is 490 PLN.
