5.11 is a brand most strongly associated with tactical pants, shirts, and backpacks—products that sparked the trend of non-uniform tactical clothing across the entire industry, something few people still realize today. 5.11 (then 5.11 Tactical) began as a manufacturer of clothing and equipment primarily for U.S. law enforcement agencies, with a particular focus on those operating in plain clothes (FBI agents were the first to recognize its potential). At one point, the brand flirted with the outdoor market, but in recent years it has returned to its roots with the professional V.XI line.

5.11’s product range is now extensive, and I’ll show you more of it in a series of upcoming articles. The sweatshirt described here falls into the outdoor line but will also work well under a uniform during intense physical activity.

The Stratos Series

The word “stratos” comes from Greek and means “army” or “military.” In the case of 5.11, it refers to a line of apparel made from a distinctive fabric. The manufacturer doesn’t give it a specific name, but the Stratos line includes various types of sweatshirts made from the same material (full zip, 1/4 zip, hoodie), as well as one model of insulated gloves (Stratos Stretch Fleece Glove), a hooded neck gaiter (Stratos Hood), and a beanie (Stratos Beanie), plus their women’s counterparts. The fabric visually resembles ripstop (the weave has a grid pattern), though it isn’t ripstop. It’s a lightweight fleece with a mesh texture and a weight of 170 g/m², made of 91% polyester and 9% elastane. It’s also designed to wick moisture and resist odor buildup.

The Stratos Full Zip version described here features a full-length zipper and spacious zippered hand pockets. At the top of the collar, the zipper is secured with a generous flap for real comfort when the sweatshirt is fully zipped up to the neck.

The 6.5 cm high stand-up collar is lined with a soft brushed tricot fabric. The same material is used to finish the bottom hem, helping the sweatshirt retain its shape. On the lower left hem, there’s a small tag with the brand’s signature logo for fans of 5.11.

The sleeves are finished with durable elastic cuffs that allow for comfortable rolling up and maintain their shape even after prolonged use.

Wearing the Stratos

The sweatshirt is lightweight and noticeably stretchy when worn. It doesn’t restrict movement in any direction. The cut is relatively fitted but allows enough room for ease of movement. The Stratos is fairly long and covers the hips, providing good protection for the lower back and kidneys. Zipped up to the top, it doesn’t feel tight around the neck—a pleasant surprise with this type of garment, especially for those with a larger build.

The zippers run smoothly. Regardless of how the fabric is positioned, it takes just one hand to open or close. Anyone who’s ever struggled with a zipper when exhausted, freezing, or with injured fingers knows how crucial this is. That’s why I emphasize it so much (I recently handled a supposedly well-designed medical bag that practically required using a foot to open, which is absurd). 5.11 has never let me down in this regard.

The fabric provides good thermal insulation while also being breathable, so you won’t overheat during exertion. After many outings in the mountains and on the range, I can confirm that the “anti-odor finish” is not just a marketing slogan. Even though it’s synthetic, the fabric feels very pleasant to wear, and I say this as someone who usually prefers natural outdoor fabrics like Merino wool. The Stratos wicks moisture effectively and dries quickly.

Why Stratos?

I’ve been using 5.11 gear and clothing almost since the brand’s inception (2003), meaning shortly after 2008. Their products are well thought-out and refined—nothing gets in the way when using them, and every element is where and how it should be. Even in something as seemingly simple as a sweatshirt. Clearly, someone at 5.11 thinks the way I do, and I appreciate good design. Another plus: their sizing is consistent, so I don’t have to worry about fit when ordering online. I buy their gear personally and sometimes receive products for review, like this one. Besides the Stratos Full Zip, I’ve owned two Stratos 1/4 Zip sweatshirts for several years. I now find that the Full Zip cut suits me better, and the full-length zipper and pockets make it more versatile for many people.

With colder days approaching, if you’re missing a mid-layer for insulation, I recommend taking a closer look at the 5.11 Stratos Full Zip (or other pieces from the Stratos line). We’re all built differently and have different preferences, so I encourage you to try it on yourself at one of the local 5.11 dealer stores.
