Transporting a long gun on the way to the shooting range, especially in the center of a large city, is not always comfortable. A person squeezing through pedestrians with a long case or bag inevitably attracts attention, and not everyone appreciates the looks from bystanders, sometimes rather “judgmental.” While the market offers a large selection of bags for carrying long guns, backpacks – especially those that are comfortable and do not attract too much attention – are far less common. A well-equipped rifle can weigh several kilograms, and not everyone has a car parked outside their home. One person will try to manage with a wheeled bag, another will build up the strength to carry a heavy case at the gym, while someone else will look for a suitable backpack.

During last week’s EnforceTac trade show, 5.11 presented a simple yet cleverly designed low-profile backpack for transporting firearms capable of carrying an SMG or a rifle, with an additional interesting feature.

The new product, which will soon reach stores, is the 5.11 COVRT SBR Plus backpack. The idea behind the project was to conceal, as much as possible, any obvious associations for bystanders regarding the contents being transported – in this case, a long gun. “As much as possible,” because it is difficult to completely hide the elongated shape of such an item, but in this case it can be considered a fairly successful attempt.
The new design is a side-opening, single-compartment backpack for long guns measuring from 70 cm to 90 cm. The maximum length is achieved thanks to an optional extendable section. The firearm inside is stabilized with Velcro straps in the MOLLE standard, a Velcro-mounted spacer insert, and an adjustable sleeve. In addition to a long gun, there is also space and the possibility to attach additional pouches for accessories, ammunition, or pistol holsters.

The 5.11 COVRT SBR Plus backpack is equipped with convenient carry handles on every side, effectively allowing it to function as a bag when needed. An interesting feature is the pocket for a ballistic plate located in the back panel (with access from the outside). A stabilizing strap allows the insertion of virtually any type of plate, which in combination with the backpack’s shape and the handle located on the back panel above the shoulder straps also makes it a form of improvised shield in unforeseen situations – such as an attack with a knife or a blunt tool – and thanks to the ballistic plate pocket it may also provide protection against gunfire. Of course, provided that the plate is actually inserted…

The backpack is made from durable nylon, although more detailed specifications have not yet been provided. It will be available for sale from August in black and Pacific Navy (dark blue) color variants.
