Today, two photos of the Chinese new basic assault rifle have appeared on social media. The weapon will probably be officially presented on October 1 during a military parade dedicated to the 70th anniversary of the People's Republic of China.
Although the official name of the carbine still remains unknown, it is probably called the "QBZ-191". According to the photographic material, the carbines come in at least two variants - with a 10.5-inch barrel, probably to be used as a PDW type weapon and by vehicle crews, and a variant for infantry with a 14.5-inch barrel. There is probably also a longer, marksman version of the new rifle.
As it is widely known from earlier reports, the new Chinese carbine is still powered by a standard Chinese 5.8 x 42 mm round. The new weapon is to replace the currently used QBZ-95-1 carbines, which have been the standard Bullpup configuration carbines used by the People's Revolutionary Army for over 25 years.
The new carbine has a Picatinny rail over its entire length. The pictures also show soldiers the use of new combat optics during exercises.
The carbine is also equipped with folding mechanical sights. Some Chinese Internet sources claimed that the new weapon was to be equipped with an M-LOK handgaurd, however, as the photographic material shows, it is a bit more traditional.
According to online sources, the new carbine has only full-auto and single fire modes and does not have a burst fire setting. The magazine has a similar in appearance to the QBZ-95-1 magazines, but the reinforcing ribs look more flat and overall they look a bit more like the PMAGs. The effective range of the shorter version is 300 meters, for the version with a 14.5-inch barrel has an effective range of 400 meters. The estimated rate of fire is 750 shots per minute.
