Glock has announced that the Portuguese army has adopted the Glock 17 Gen5 FS as its official sidearm. The contract was signed after Glock won the tender over several other major European manufacturers (Sig Sauer, H&K, CZ, Beretta). The first batch of 2910 pistols has already been delivered to Portugal and the delivery process should be completed by the end of the year.
After the recent acquisition of the FN SCAR-L and FN Minimi LMGs for the armed forces, the Portuguese army chose for its sidearm the G17 Gen5 FS (Front Serrations on the slide), made in a custom Coyote/FDE color.
The G17 will replace the legendary but outdated Walther P38, Beretta 92, HK USP and SIG P228 pistols. The double-sided magazine and slide release levers provide flexibility and meet the needs of left and right-handed shooters. The G17 Gen5 is also equipped with a Glock Marksman Barrel (GMB) for increased accuracy and precision of shots. In addition, the gun is equipped with a carrying sling loop inspired by the G19X model, the improved Gen5 trigger system, serrations on the front of the slide for easy reloading, the so-called press check and Glock's "night" iron sights. All this makes the "Portuguese" version of the G17 Gen5 look like an almost completely new version of the Glock 17.
Nevertheless, Glock says there are no plans to release this G17 Gen5 variant on the commercial market. We hope that 2020 will bring us more news on this subject and we hope that the Austrians will change their minds. After all, the same was supposed happen with the G19X model ...
