In response to the American NGSW (Next Generation Squad Weapon) program, which ended with the adoption of a SIG Sauer design and the new hybrid 6.8x51 mm cartridge (NGSW kicks into gear), the Kalashnikov concern together with the TULA ammunition plant developed a new cartridge. The 6.02x41 mm presented on December 12, 2023 year is to be the next step after the 7.62x39 mm and 5.45x39 mm ammunition. As stated, the kinetic energy of the bullet at a distance of 900 m is to be similar to the above-mentioned calibers at a distance of 500 m.

During the research, several different configurations were compared, from 6.7x45 mm through 6.5x39 mm and the finally the 6.02x41 mm was adopted.

The work also included special-purpose (armor piercing) ammunition with a carbide core and new weapons.

On the basis of the AK-12 carbine, the AK-22 adapted to used the new ammunition and with it the Chukavin СВЧ sniper rifle in the Mini version. The shortened version is expected to be lighter and have better maneuverability. What is noteworthy is the use of parts from the modernization of the AK carbine in the form of an AK-12M stock.
