Last month was the 59th consecutive month in which background checks for future gun owners exceeded the 1 million mark, according to data based on federal background checks on probable unauthorized gun sales. Maintaining this number is quickly becoming a sustainable goal in terms of America's appetite for purchasing firearms.
This number was verified by the National Shooting Sports Foundation through an analysis of data published by the FBI's National Instant Criminal Background Check System for the last month. The unadjusted June 2024 figure from the FBI NICS database was 1,958,447 - after NSSF sifted through the data to remove background checks and re-checks for concealed carry permits - they ended up with 1,059,037 probable sales.
In summary, last month's data represents an almost five-year period, which started in July 2019, during which checks exceeded the million-per-month threshold.
