North Industries Group Corporation Limited (Norinco), a Chinese state-owned, has developed the NAR CS/LR17, which is a modular rifle chambered for 7.62x39mm. It is marketed as a next-generation weapon system and draws particular inspiration from the FN SCAR (Special Operations Forces Combat Assault Rifle) program. Initial prototypes have been shown around 2016 and since then have undergone much development. Part of the NAR family of next-generation rifles, the CS/LR17 focuses on modularity and versatility. This whole series is designed as a multi-caliber system, modular that is to compete with modern Western rifles.
The CS/LR17 is gas-operated and has a rotating bolt. It is fed from standard AK magazines. The new carbine adopts a conventional layout similar to the QBZ-03 model, on par with modern Western weapon trends. These features have already been introduced into other Chinese firearms, such as the QBZ-191. The top rail and handguard rails are made in the Picatinny standard, allowing to attach many modern accessories. It includes an ambidextrous safety/selector switch, and the charging handle is positioned on the right side, which is consistent with most Chinese carbines.
The goal of the NAR is to develop a family of modular carbines that meet a range of customer needs while also maintaining a high degree interchangeable parts and similar ergonomics across different models. This design allows users to quickly and easily switch between different configurations. The system will also offer options for different barrel lengths that will be suitable for use in different tasks.
