The segment of lightweight, head-mounted thermal imaging devices has remained a challenging area for manufacturers for years. The most affordable designs often involve compromises in image quality, smoothness of operation, or user comfort, while more advanced systems quickly reach high price tags. Nightfox is looking to position itself somewhere between these two extremes with the introduction of the Nightfox Arctic Head-Mounted Thermal Monocular, a lightweight thermal monocular designed for nighttime observation and head- or helmet-mounted use.

The new monocular is the first device of its kind from British brand Nightfox. It is aimed at users looking for a basic observation tool that can function both as a handheld thermal scanner and as part of a larger equipment setup. Thanks to its low weight and complete mounting kit, Arctic is intended as a solution for those beginning their journey into thermal imaging who do not want to invest in more advanced and expensive systems.

At the heart of the device is an uncooled thermal sensor with a resolution of 256 x 192 pixels, using 12 μm pixel pitch. The sensor operates at a 50 Hz refresh rate and has a NETD sensitivity of ≤30 mK. The high refresh rate is intended to reduce the less fluid image and latency found in simpler thermal imaging devices, which can be important when observing moving objects or while on the move. According to the manufacturer, the Nightfox Arctic can detect heat sources at a distance of approximately 180 meters, while object recognition is possible at around 100 meters.

Its operation does not depend on visible light. The sensor analyzes thermal radiation emitted by objects, allowing it to operate even in complete darkness. The image is displayed on a 2.06-inch (5.2 cm) AMOLED screen with a resolution of 410 x 502 pixels. The use of this type of display is intended to improve image contrast and readability compared with less expensive designs equipped with standard LCD panels. Several color palettes are also available, allowing the image presentation to be adapted to observation conditions, including the default tint and optional rainbow, iron red, white hot, and black hot modes.

The monocular offers a basic 1x magnification and digital zoom of up to 4x. The 7 mm-diameter lens features fixed focus, while its field of view is approximately 23.8° horizontally and 17.4° vertically. This allows a larger area to be scanned more quickly and makes it easier to maintain situational awareness while observing terrain. One of the key features of the design is hands-free operation. The package includes an adjustable head strap and a dovetail-type adapter for helmet mounting (or another platform equipped with a suitable mount). The Arctic is also compatible with the Nightfox Prowl 2 mounting system, allowing it to be used as part of a larger setup combining thermal imaging with digital night vision.

The manufacturer has prepared a complete starter kit that allows the device to be used immediately. The package includes the Arctic monocular, adjustable head strap, mounting accessories, dovetail adapter, USB-C cable, 32 GB microSD memory card, and a 3500 mAh 18650 battery. The user also receives a protective case, wrist strap, and a multilingual user manual, including a Polish-language version.

Despite its extensive equipment package, the Arctic remains a design focused primarily on mobility. The device weighs approximately 280 g including the battery, while its housing meets the IP65 standard, providing protection against dust and water. Power is supplied by a rechargeable battery which, according to the manufacturer, provides approximately 9 hours of operation. Charging is handled via a USB-C port, and the ability to use standard power banks is a major advantage during extended use in the field. The device can record thermal video footage to a memory card, with the Arctic supporting cards with a maximum capacity of up to 256 GB. The manufacturer provides a two-year warranty.

The Nightfox Arctic fits into the growing trend of making lightweight thermal imaging systems more accessible, whereas such devices were previously associated mainly with expensive professional equipment. The design will obviously not replace more advanced devices equipped with higher-performance sensors, but it represents an interesting option for users looking for a lightweight and versatile observation system, ranging from outdoor enthusiasts and airsoft users to those using thermal imaging during shooting events or nighttime terrain observation.
