The Royal Thai Army has selected American-made Tippmann Arms M4-22 Elite .22 LR semi-automatic rifles. The firearms will be used to train participants in the Territorial Defense Student Program. The new rifles will replace the Armi Jager .22 LR models previously in service, which have been used by Thai training units for more than 40 years. The decision was announced by Tippmann Arms in a statement published on August 27, 2026.

The selection of the new firearms was overseen by the Territorial Defense Command, a Royal Thai Army command responsible for a military training program for school and university students. The program includes physical conditioning, discipline, leadership development, and firearms training. Live-fire training is conducted at as many as 35 locations across the country.

The M4-22 Elite is an American-made semi-automatic rimfire rifle operating on a simple blowback principle. Its design replicates the ergonomics and control layout characteristic of the AR-15 and M4 platforms, allowing trainees to practice handling a firearm with a layout similar to that of military rifles. The use of .22 LR ammunition helps reduce training costs compared with centerfire cartridges, while its low recoil makes it easier to learn the fundamentals of marksmanship. According to Tippmann Arms, the manufacturer's stated reliability, durability, and ease of maintenance were important factors in the rifle's selection.

M4-22 Elite rifles will replace older Armi Jager designs used by Thai training units for more than four decades.

The commercially available M4-22 Elite features upper and lower receivers made from aluminum. The rifle is fitted with a 4150 steel barrel measuring approximately 41 cm (16 inches) in length, with a 1:16″ twist rate. The muzzle is threaded 1/2×28 and comes factory-equipped with an A2-style flash hider. Other features include a nickel-plated bolt, a functional forward assist, a bolt catch, and a charging handle in the standard AR-15 configuration. The rifle also incorporates a Mil-Spec FCG trigger assembly with a stated pull weight of approximately 20 N and a two-position safety selector. Field-stripping is accomplished by pushing out the pins connecting the upper and lower receivers, as with firearms based on the AR-15 platform.

The rifle features a free-floating aluminum handguard approximately 30 cm (12 inches) long, with M-LOK mounting slots. A Picatinny rail runs along the top of the rifle, allowing the installation of sights and optics. Standard equipment includes folding, adjustable iron sights, an adjustable stock, and a Gen2 pistol grip. The rifle is also fitted with an ejection port dust cover, a brass deflector, and an ambidextrous sling attachment plate. The manufacturer states that the design is compatible with most standard AR-15 stocks, handguards, and sights, as well as interchangeable AR-15 trigger assemblies.

The M4-22 is available in several variants differing in equipment and configuration. The civilian M4-22 Elite with a 10-round magazine has an overall length ranging from approximately 79 to 88 cm (31.1–34.6 inches), while the version with a 25-round magazine measures approximately 80 to 89 cm (31.5–35 inches), depending on the stock position. Both versions weigh approximately 2.5 kg (5.5 lb). However, Tippmann Arms has not released detailed specifications for the rifles intended for the Thai military, so their exact configuration remains unknown.

The new rifle was presented on August 27, 2026, at an exhibition held alongside a ceremony marking the conferral of military rank insignia on fifth-year participants in the Territorial Defense Student Program. The event took place at the Royal Thai Army Club in Bangkok. Dennis Tippmann Jr., president of Tippmann Arms, expressed his satisfaction with the Thai command's selection of the M4-22 Elite. According to the manufacturer, the decision also represents another step forward in the company's international expansion.
