The Ruger American Competition is a semi-automatic pistol with a hammer mechanism and a polymer frame. It is feed from magazines holding seventeen 9x19 mm Para rounds. What distinguishes it from other models of the line is the extended 127 mm barrel and a different, stainless steel slide.
It has an adjustable rear sight and a front sight equipped with a fiber optic insert that facilitates aiming. The longer aiming line improves accuracy. What's more, the slide is ready to accept miniature collimator sights from a wide range of manufacturers. In addition, holes in the front of the slide reduce its weight, which slightly reduces the muzzle climb and speeds up the reload cycle. Speaking of reloading, there is ribbing on the front and back of the slide to facilitate it, as well as an indicator showing if a round is currently chambered.
The polymer frame has also been changed. Interchangeable grip panels have been retained to allow adjustment to the shooter's hand, but they have been covered with a more aggressive texture for a more secure grip. The Ruger American Competition, similarly to earlier varieties, received double-sided manipulators in the form of a magazine release button and a slide stop. The weapon was deprived of a safety lever present in some models of this line, but a passive safety feature was left in the trigger. The lower part of the grip has been properly trimmed to facilitate pulling the magazine out in the event of a serious failure. An accessory rail for mounting flashlights or laser sights is also present, which will be appreciated by shooters interested in defensive use.
The gun was tested by firing a large amount of ammunition with an increased powder charge. According to the manufacturer, the partial firing ping tension mechanism during the reloading cycle is to increase the smoothness of the trigger mechanism. The lead protrusion of the breach block has also been extended, which is supposed to reduce the perceptible muzzle climb. The slide was installed in a single-piece steel frame containing the guides and a trigger mechanism. All this rests in the polymer grip module.
