Although the AR-15 system weapons are still relatively new on the Russian market, they have already appeared on it in numerous configurations. An interesting example are carbines manufactured by Souz-TM, a 5.45x39mm caliber weapon, adapted for the use of converted AK-74 magazines.
The manufacturer offers such weapons with a DI (direct action of powder gases) gas system, marked as the STM-545, and in a system with a short stroke piston, the STM-415.
Adapting AK-74 magazines to work with Souz-TM weapons consists in removing their front and rear latches and cutting a hole on the side of the magazine to cooperated with the AR system magazine release. Based on the manufacturer's photos, it can be assumed that AK-12 magazines can be prepared for use in a similar way.
The magazine well itself has been modified to match the shape and dimensions of AK-74 magazines. According to assurances, these solutions should contribute to improving the reliability of ammunition feeding in relation to other models of AR-15 weapons in the 5.45x39mm caliber, using magazines dedicated to this system.
The receivers of the Souz-TM carbines are made of 7075-T6 aluminum, the chrome-plated barrel is cold forged and finished with a 1/2x28 thread. The weapon uses a proprietary trigger mechanism and muzzle brake by Souz-TM, it is also equipped with a pistol grip and a stock from DLG Tactical or FAB Defense. Metal parts have been covered with a Cerakote type protective coating.
The basic version of the carbine with the DI system, the STM-545, is priced at 320,000 rubles (about 3,850 EUR).
