The only squadron of the US Army airborne forces specializing in reconnaissance in Arctic conditions is testing a new light machine gun. The 1st squadron of the 40th Regiment, stationed in one of the coldest regions of Alaska (where temperatures go below -30°C), is testing the Sig Sauer XM250 light machine gun in training ground conditions. This weapon is to replace the famous M249 SAW.
At the same time, the Vortex M157 Fire Control targeting system, which can work with new and old machine guns, is being tested.
The current NGSW (Next Generation Squad Weapon) tests are a continuation of the weapon verification process previously conducted by soldiers of the 75th Ranger Regiment and paratroopers from the 101st Division airborne. Earlier, in over 100 different tests, the army fired over one and a half million 6.8x51 mm rounds used in the Sig machine gun.
In the future, the XM250 will be tested in humid and hot climate conditions, that is in the jungle.
