If the Adeptus Mechanicus from the Warhammer 40,000 universe designed a weapon for fighting in confined spaces, the result would probably look similar to the new weapon package from Daniel Defense. The American company recently unveiled a limited-edition Breaching Package series that combines an AR-15 platform rifle with an under-barrel shotgun. While the design is not the futuristic bolter known from fictional battlefields, it shares a similar concept beyond its appearance: maximizing the capabilities of a single operator. The new packages were developed in cooperation with distributors Tyr 1 Outfitters and Allegheny Arms & Gun Works as a special offering for enthusiasts interested in configurations inspired by military special-purpose equipment. The package is available in variants featuring either the RIS II or RIS III handguard.
The concept behind the Breaching Package is to combine a primary service weapon with a dedicated breaching tool. The under-barrel shotgun allows the operator to transition quickly from engaging targets to breaching entry points without having to switch to a separate weapon. During breaching operations, specialized ammunition is used to destroy locks, hinges, and other structural components of doors.
The concept employed by Daniel Defense is directly derived from the Masterkey system, which became one of the best-known examples of an under-barrel shotgun mounted beneath a rifle. The system was developed in the late 1980s by Knight’s Armament Company, and its original version utilized a shortened Remington 870 shotgun. The name itself refers to the system's role as a universal key capable of quickly overcoming obstacles. The Masterkey gained widespread recognition through its use by U.S. special operations forces, and although it was later replaced in some units by dedicated breaching shotguns, the concept of an under-barrel smoothbore weapon remains one of the most distinctive examples of specialized military rifle configurations.
The Breaching Package is available in two versions: the Tyr 1 M4A1 RIS II and the Tyr 1 M4A1 RIS III. Production of each variant is limited to just 50 units. Both versions feature a barrel measuring approximately 14.5 inches (37 cm) and an under-barrel K.T.M.S. 12 shotgun. The package also includes an AAC 51T Muzzle Device paired with an AAC Rebar Cutter Muzzle Attachment, as well as a B5 SOPMOD Stock. The RIS II rail system was developed by Daniel Defense as part of the SOPMOD Block II program conducted by the U.S. Special Operations Command. It was designed for intensive use by special operations units and for integration with the M203 under-barrel grenade launcher. The aluminum handguard features a full-length Picatinny rail and a robust mounting system that provides exceptional rigidity. The newer RIS III is an evolution of the previous system. It replaces the side Picatinny rails with the M-LOK interface, improving ergonomics while reducing overall weight. At the same time, it retains the full-length top rail and several structural solutions inherited from the RIS II.
The Breaching Package remains a solution intended primarily for specialized applications. At the same time, systems of this type continue to occupy a niche role. Their additional weight and highly specialized purpose mean that Masterkey-style configurations have not replaced conventional rifles or the separate breaching tools and shotguns used by assault teams.
