The AK-20 rifles come in three lengths with different handguards. The main feature that distinguishes them from the classic variants is the replacement of the Kalashnikov handguard's front base with a design that ensures a free-floating barrel, which has a direct impact on the accuracy of the weapon. The handguard does not touch the barrel at any point, it is mounted only by its rear part attached to the receiver.
In addition, carbines use adapters located in the place of the classic stock mount. Depending on the variant, it can be a stock designed for the AR-15 carbine mounted on a guide, or any stock designed for the SIG Sauer MCX carbines, mounted on a short section of a Picatinny rail. There is also a variant with a classic stock. Interestingly, the AK-20, built on the basis of the AKS receiver, use holes for mounting a stock folded under the receiver as the slots of the QD carrying sling swivels.

Returning to the handguard, it is equipped with M-LOK ports in 7 planes, and a top Picatinny rail reaching half the length of the receiver cover. This solution allows attachment of optical and optronic sights, from collimators to scopes. The design of the handguard, however, required removing the rear sight from the AK-20, and going a step further, the front sight that became useless. In addition to the handguard covered with mounting ports, a mostly smooth polymer model is also available, except for the top rail and three ports underneath, as well as on both sides of the gas tube.
Under the handguard, apart from the barrel, there is a gas tube with a gas flow regulator. The internal mechanisms of weapon has not changed significantly. The regulator allows the AK-20 to work with a silencer or completely cut off the gas flow, which drastically reduces the sound of the shot when using subsonic ammunition.
The AK-20 will be available in 7.62 x 39 mm, 5.56 x 45 mm and 5.45 x 39 mm caliber, and on request, the .50 Beowulf. Pre-serial production is to be launched in April, and serial production is expected to start by the end of 2020.
