The TR and RD carbine is to provide the highest quality basis for self-modification according to the needs of the end user. Hence, it contained a full polymer stock, gas tube cover, handguard, and pistol grip. The barrel was finished with a slotted flash hider. The rear sight was also changed, the V-shaped notch was changed to U shaped one (Fuller Rear Sight), which facilitates faster aiming.
Factory improvements over traditional AKs include a safety/selector switch with an additional ledge to facilitate operating it with the trigger finger, as well as a proprietary adjustable gas block that is also the base of the front sight. The latter is a drastic improvement in the functionality of the AK which, in principle, is a heavily overpraised weapon. This part will allow adaptation to the currently used ammunition or enable to use the carbine with a silencer.
Cooperation with Rifle Dynamics did not come from nowhere. RD rifles are known for their very high quality and reliability, which is also reflected in the price. The Thunder Ranch AK is a 7.62 x 39 mm carbine with a 16-inch barrel and a standard twist rate. All parts of the mechanism (bolt carrier guides, the bolt carrier, the bolt and the trigger mechanism) have been adapted to each other to achieve the performance and reliability. The metal surfaces were parked and then covered with an olive-colored Moly Resin coating resistant to abrasion and high temperatures.
The cost of the basic carbine is 1,600 USD, the buyer can order it with modifications in the form of a gas tube with an Ultimak rail for an additional 110 USD, a standard AK side rail (150 USD), a selected flash hider enabling quick mounting of a silencer (barrel shortened to 14.5 inches, device welded permanently) for 300 USD and a set of two additional magazines and a Blue Force Gear belt for 100 USD.
What's more, for those who want to get to know the design and manufacturing process of AK thoroughly, it is possible to build a rifle by yourself during the Rifle Dynamics course, and then take part in the Urban Rifle training course with Clint Smith at the Thunder Rach training center. The training sessions are scheduled to start in January 2021.
