The new Russian submachine gun, inspired by the FN P90 design, is a significant departure from earlier models such as the Bizon and Vityaz. The patent, marked RU 2776332 C1, was filed in 2021 and registered in 2022 by the Penza Institute of Artillery Engineering. The design indicates that the weapon is designed for operations in confined spaces, such as urban operations. Key features include a high rate of fire and a compact design.
The technical description indicates that the new submachine gun has dimensions similar to the AK-105 rifle and is equipped with a unique, transparent magazine with a capacity of 30 rounds, resembling the shape of the letter "L". The most important innovation in this design is the method of feeding ammunition: the cartridges in the magazine are arranged transversely, and during loading they rotate 90 degrees to properly position themselves in the magazine feed lips. The weapon is designed for 9x18 mm Makarov ammunition.
The inspiration taken from the FN P90 can also be seen in other aspects of the design, such as the bolt carrier and the use of a double return spring. The weapon operates on the principle of a simple blowback, which traditionally requires the use of a heavier bolt carrier, thus increasing the weight of the entire design. It also uses proven elements from the AK series carbine, such as the firing pin and extractor (in particular from the AK-74 and AK-12 models). A characteristic solution is the ejection of spent casings downwards, which is similar to the one used in the FN P90. The submachine gun is also equipped with a two-stage AR-style trigger and an ambidextrous safety/firing mode selector.
It is currently unclear whether this project will remain at the research concept stage or whether it will be developed and implemented into production.
