Special Operations Joint Task Force soldiers participating in Operation Inherent Resolve in Syria (SOJTF-OIR) were photographed during field tests of SMASH smart sights mounted on M4A1 carbines. The tests took place on May 30 in the At-Tanf garrison.

The devices are manufactured by the American company Smart Shooter. First information about SMASH sights date back to April 2018 and were posted at the TFB blog. Since then, the sights have been assessed by the US and Australian Armed Forces. According to the information provided by the DoD, SOJTF-OIR regularly tests new solutions in the field of weapon technology, including the SMASH sight. It has not been disclosed, however, whether any of them were used during combat operations.

The sights is equipped with a set of sensors enabling tracking of a moving target, determining the direction of movement and speed, and thus providing a correction that a shooter must make to make an effective hit. Some SMASG variants are to be able to lock the trigger mechanism until the reticle is in the right place. The Americans used mobile ground targets and a cardboard boxes suspended under a drone as targets.

Commander Lt. Tim Hawkins, the US SOCOM spokesperson revealed that the SMASH sights were purchased in March 2019 for US SOF to determine their combat suitability. The results have not been specified yet. The devices are to be used primarily to combat small air targets due to the increasing frequency of arming them with small payloads in the Middle East.
