As informed by the General Command of the Armed Forces, Lt. Col. Grzegorz Pawlak, divers-sappers from the 12th Trauler Squadron from Świnoujście together with the 21st Sapper Patrol from Krosno Odrzańskie are extracting an arsenal of ammunition from Lake Ciemne near Torzym in the province of Lubuskie.
A dump for German and Soviet missile weapons from World War II was discovered there. A report about the find was received by the Police on June 1. The person that notified the Police was Tomasz Kwiatkowski, a resident of Torzym, as well as a spokesperson for the 17th Greater Poland Mechanized Brigade in Międzyrzecz. Ammunition was discovered thanks to the drought that caused the water level in the lake to drop so that the projectiles were exposed. Sappers were called into action and took some of the armaments.
However, it turned out that there is a real arsenal under the water - several hundred German missiles and Soviet Katyusha rockets. This resulted in calling a special diver-sapper unit, which have been working on the lake for four days. Their work is still underway. Only after 4 hours of this operation, more than sever hundred 80 and 130 mm shells were extracted from the bottom of the lake, along with two rockets.
Probably, all the equipment was abandoned at the end or shortly after the end of the war. There is also a second hypothesis stating that the place where the equipment was found was a dumping point where ammunition found in the fields was disposed of.
