Sometimes you face a day when it’s hard to decide: which firearm to take to the shooting range, which replica to pack for an airsoft game (the author combines both passions), and how many of them to bring. Clearing up these doubts often depends on the specific rules of the scenario, the regulations of a competition, or simply the conditions in which the shooter will operate.

Once the decision regarding rifles, shotguns, or their airsoft counterparts has been made, one important question remains: how to transport them? Depending on how you travel, different solutions offer different advantages and drawbacks. Hard cases are best when weight doesn’t matter and the equipment is stuffed among other luggage. A lightweight “mini” soft case is suitable for solo car trips when you have plenty of space. But what works well not only during road travel but also later, across open terrain where you can rely only on your own muscles?

One of the manufacturers tackling this dilemma is the well-known 5.11, whose product line follows the Always Be Ready motto.
The 42" Double Rifle Case from 5.11 is an elegant, unassuming soft case whose interior hides many well-thought-out solutions. First and foremost, it reliably protects two firearms up to 106 cm in length. The product is made of 600D polyester, which offers increased resistance to abrasion and harsh weather conditions — and the material is relatively easy to clean. It uses YKK® zippers that can be additionally secured against opening; they feel solid and operate smoothly.

The case maintains high rigidity thanks to thick foam padding in the walls. Although it does not offer the level of protection provided by a hard case, it inspires enough confidence to entrust it with the safety of your firearms during transport and use.

Carrying a loaded case is made easier by three transport systems designed by the manufacturer. In addition to the standard handle — with a comfort pad — the user can take advantage of a detachable long shoulder strap and wide, removable backpack straps. I particularly liked the latter: compared to similar cases I’ve used, the 42" Double Rifle Case proved to be the most comfortable during long hikes — thanks to the quality of the straps and the foam insert in the wall of the case, providing a good balance between stiffness and cushioning. Although the comfort level can’t match that of high-quality tactical or hiking backpacks, the straps on this 5.11 case are not merely decorative; their design comes from the well-known RUSH backpack series.

On the opposite wall of the case there is a second, smaller pocket with a velcro panel, a MOLLE module, and a narrow strip for a namepatch.
Are there more pockets or additional compartments? Not this time — this is a minimalist case fitting the character of CenterLine™ products from 5.11: functionality, subdued aesthetics, and discretion. The absence of flashy manufacturer logos further supports a low-profile style — which will appeal to those who must move with a long gun through public spaces without attracting too much attention.

When you open the main compartment, the eyes are drawn to the light, aesthetic lining and the detachable velcro divider. On both sides there are MOLLE straps — although noticeably fewer on one side. They serve two purposes: they allow you to mount additional pouches and pockets for magazines and accessories (useful when only one firearm is carried in the case), and they are used to stabilize the transported firearm. The manufacturer has included four reinforced velcro straps compatible with MOLLE, which can be freely repositioned and, together with the corner pockets, allow you to secure the firearm firmly in place.

The build quality of the main compartment raises no concerns — the case protects the equipment well, and its interior height exceeding 30 cm makes it easy to fit firearms heavily equipped with accessories and optics. However, fully comfortable access to the entire space is slightly limited by the zipper ending: a few extra centimeters would allow the case to open fully to 180°, making it easier to use both sides simultaneously.

The smaller compartment is designed similarly — it also opens only partially. If the case is not standing upright, using this pocket one-handed can be difficult. On the other hand, this design reduces the risk of accidentally losing loose items, which is an advantage considering the intended purpose of the pocket. The rest of the compartment’s features work flawlessly: inside are elastic mounting straps that easily hold various AR and AK magazines, pistol magazines, as well as accessories like a multitool or flashlight. Wider magazines, such as those for .308 Win, will not fit inside. A handgun can also be secured under the elastic bands, but there is an additional reinforced open-top pouch specifically designed for it.

The 42" Double Rifle Case from 5.11 is a practical product combining selected advantages of various firearm transport systems, while fitting into the global low-profile shooting trend. As expected from a reputable manufacturer, it features high-quality materials and well-thought-out solutions that make carrying and using the case more comfortable. The solid construction inspires confidence and, even when fully loaded (in extreme cases the case can hold up to four short carbines and several pistols), it maintains a slim and discreet appearance.

However, a soft case will not protect firearms as effectively as a hard, heavy case, nor can it be rolled up like a thin fabric sleeve to fit inside a backpack. Its features are optimally balanced: they allow for long-distance, comfortable movement with equipment while offering protection against many mechanical and weather-related factors. Whether you're heading to the shooting range or carrying an additional rifle replica during a demanding milsim — the 5.11 case will let you stay fully focused on your mission.
